ABSTRACT

Gossypiboma is referred to as surgical gauze or sponge left in the body of a patient inadvertently following surgery. There are two types of foreign body reaction in the body. The first type is exudative, with the resultant formation of an abscess with or without bacterial invasion and usually causes related clinical symptoms shortly after surgery. The second type is aseptic with extensive adhesions and encapsulating in a foreign body granuloma. Gossypiboma typically have an inconsistent radiologic appearance determined by the time, the type of material and the anatomical location. Furthermore, radio-opque markers are sometimes disintegrated or fragmented over times and ultrasound or CT may be indistinguishable from intra-abdominal abscess or tumor. We report 71-year-old woman in whom gossypiboma is severely adherent with ileal loop caused by pelvic mass.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify human papillomavirus (HPV) in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and to evaluate the persistence of HPV after loop electrosurgical excision precedure (LEEP). METHODS: Records of 138 patients with LEEP performed due to cervicitis, CIN I, CIN II and CIN III were reviewed and persistence of HPV were followed up at 3, 6, 9 and 12 month after LEEP treatment from January 1996 to December 1999. RESULTS: Among 202 patients, 138 cases (68.3%) were showed HPV positive before LEEP and histologic findings were showed as cervicitis 20 cases (14.5%), CIN I 23 cases (16.7%), CIN II 31 cases (22.5%) and CIN III 64 cases (46.3%). Persistence of HPV after LEEP treatment were 10.9% (15/138) at 3 month and 2.9% (4/138) at 6 month. However, among 15 cases of persistent HPV, only 5 cases (33.3%) were showed an abnormal Pap smear at 3 month after LEEP. CONCLUSION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) was eliminated over 90% at 3 month after LEEP treatment in CIN. Detection of HPV was helpful to estimate therapeutic effect and to predict the recurrence or persistence of CIN after LEEP treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) on embryonal development in in vitro culture. METHODS: This is designed in vitro model using eggs from mouse. The eggs from mouse were assigned 29 for control group, 53 for 20 ng/ml of LIF, 88 for 40 ng/ml of LIF, 68 for 80 ng/ml of LIF respectively for in vitro fertilization. And 26 fertilized eggs at 2 cell stage from mouse also were assigned. The mouse embryos of all groups were cultured in medium supplemented with LIF in different concentrations, whereas the eggs in control group was cultured in medium without supplement of LIF. RESULTS: At 72 hours culture of eggs from in vitro fertilization, there was a slight increas in rate of embryonal development to morula in both LIF-20 and LIF-40 as results of 64.15% and 75% respectively, while 42.65% in inferior rate of LIF-80, compare with 51.72% in control group. But the difference between these each groups were not significant in statistically (p< or =0.05). And after 96 hours culture of eggs, the rates blastocyst formation was significantly higher in both LIF-20 and LIF-40 as 56.6% and 63.63% than those in control and LIF-80 as 44.83% and 35.29% respectively. On culturing eggs from in vivo fertilization, the rates of blastocyst formation was significantly not only higher as 85% and 81.81% respectively in medium supplemented with LIF-40 and LIF-80 than 42.3% in LIF-20 but also embryonal cell viability were remakedly improved at 96 hours after culture. CONCLUSION: The LIF in low dose is embryotrophic, but LIF in high dose is embryotoxic on eggs from in vitro fertilization. Whereas on culturing eggs from in vivo fertilization, LIF is more beneficial with dose dependent in high concentration.
